PADDY PALLIN SPONSORSHIP GUIDELINES

Paddy Pallin are proud to sponsor Australians exploring the natural environment around them. Paddy Pallin is also a major sponsor of the Oxfam Trailwalker event and through this joint work with Oxfam we are proud to make a positive difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Unfortunately our annual sponsorship budget has been entirely allocated. As such we will not be accepting any sponsorship applications until further notice.

Each year Paddy Pallin is proud to be the major outdoor sponsor of the Oxfam Trailwalker which helps to raise awareness and money for millions of people in developing nations worldwide.

In addition to this Paddy Pallin periodically donates money to environmental causes through our “Don’t Bag the Environment” campaign in our stores.  This campaign actively encourages customers not to take a carry bag.  For each carry bag that is refused Paddy Pallin donates 20c to a nominated environmental cause.

Above and beyond this Paddy Pallin are proud to sponsor select adventurers in their pursuit to explore our globe and their inner strength.  You don’t have to be climbing the world’s tallest mountains to be sponsored by Paddy Pallin.

Paddy Pallin the man had a passion for discovering the Australian wilderness and his own limits.  Today Paddy Pallin the company sponsors those adventurers who are endeavouring to create a unique journey.  To explore more of our globe than the average person, helping to improve the circumstances of those less fortunate or helping to conserve the natural environment that we all love to enjoy.

SPONSORSHIPS:

1000 HOUR DAY EXPEDITION

Chris Bray (24) and Clark Carter (23) are headed to the largely unexplored Victoria Island – the ninth largest island on Earth – in Northern Canada.  Alone for 100 days, the adventurers will haul 200kgs of food and supplies behind them for 700km across tundra, water and ice in a cart they have designed and built for their quest to cross the island.

The carts, with giant wheels 1.5m tall, are made from carbon fibre, ballistic-grade Kevlar, and aluminium.  They join together to form a platform for their tents, and even float across rivers.

The risks of the expedition - although well managed - are real.  Polar bears are the biggest danger, and Chris was chased by a pack of Arctic wolves on his last visit to the island.

“It can be scary at times, and sometimes you want to give up - but that’s what it’s all about.” Says Clark.

Chris and Clark will be relying on gear and clothing provided by Paddy Pallin to keep them warm and alive in this unhospitable terrain.

ICEBIRD KITESLED EXPEDITION 2008

If you have ever visited an alpine area and caught sight of a giant kite towing a steerable sled around the mountains at speed, then you may already know of the Icebird Kitesled program.

For several years now, Pat Spiers, Dave Goldie and Ben Deacon have been developing and testing their own way of travelling the alpine and polar regions of the world.
Propelled by futuristic power kites and piloting high-tech sleds, they have already traversed icecaps and mountain ranges in both hemispheres.

The latest version of their Kitesled is a light, manoeuvrable design made from a mix of carbon fibre, high-molecular-weight polyethylene, stainless steel and good old-fashioned timber. It can be powered by various kites ranging from 1.5 to 25 square metres in area, or man-hauled on windless days.

In March, Pat and Dave are off to travel the 1500km Eastern shoreline of Hudson Bay in Northern Quebec.   This remote, wild and windy coast has many charms and challenges to offer these wind powered ice adventurers, ranging from pressure ridges and blue ice to polar bears, remote Inuit settlements and treacherous river outflows that never freeze.  They will be kept warm and alive with specialist clothing and equipment provided by Paddy Pallin.

It’s a unique goal, a unique way to travel, and is supported by Paddy Pallin.

OXFAM AUSTRALIA – TRAILWALKER

Oxfam Trailwalker is the world's greatest team challenge. And it's also one of the toughest. The challenge is to get your team of four across 100km of Australian bush in less than 48 hours - and, collectively, to raise at least $1,000 to help to overcome poverty and suffering around the world.

To the credit of Australian participants and Oxfam Australia the amount raised each year has been growing substantially.  Paddy Pallin has been a National Sponsor for the last seven years, as well as the official retailer for Trailwalker specific gear and merchandise. We are incredibly proud to continue to be associated with such a pinnacle event that achieves wonderful results on so many levels.

DONATIONS:

BLUE GUM HIGH FOREST

Thank you to all those members who visited a Paddy Pallin store from April to September 2007 and donated money to the Paddy Pallin Don’t Bag the Environment campaign by saying “no” to a carry bag. Your contribution has helped to save the St Ives Blue Gum High Forest.

On 18th December, the Mayor of Ku-ring-gai Council in northern Sydney announced that the last piece of the St Ives Blue Gum High Forest was brought into public ownership.  This small urban forest has 30m high blue gum and blackbutts and is the most in-tact remnant of this ecological community left on the planet.  Arthur Phillip in 1788 walked through here on his first inland exploration.  The site has national, local, historical and ecological values.

We did our bit for Australia by contributing to the purchase of the last piece of the jigsaw.  Thank you for your contribution.  It just goes to show that small actions by a lot of people can make a big difference.

Nancy Pallin, Patron of the Paddy Pallin Don’t Bag the Environment campaign.

If you would like to make a donation directly to the current Paddy Pallin Don’t Bag the Environment campaign you can do so through the Paddy Pallin foundation.  To find out how click here  http://www.paddypallinfoundation.org.au/

2,270 gum seedlings for the Western Pygmy Possum
330 acres for the Major Mitchell Cockatoo
30 acres for the Northern Spotted Quoll

To all of you who purchased or received a Paddy Pallin Bush Heritage Australia Christmas Card last Christmas we would like to say Thank You on behalf of the Western Pygmy Possum, Major Mitchell Cockatoo and the Northern Spotted Quoll.

PADDY PALLIN FUNDS ECO LOOS ON THE KOKODA TRACK

It’s not every day that you get a call out of the blue asking for help to build a toilet in Papua New Guinea.

Garry Sundin from Team BIGFISH has a close association with the Kokoda Track: his  father finished his WW2 service in New Guinea.  When he and his mates - many with a similar family connection to the trail - decided to trek the Kokoda Track for ANZAC day 2008, they wanted to do more then just visit where their relatives had been before them.

So when Garry approached Paddy Pallin to help the team deliver the very first ecologically friendly toilet to the Kokoda Track how could we possibly say no?  To Team BIGFISH’s credit they have raised enough money to deliver not just one Eco Toilet but three eco-friendly ROTA-LOOs to the Kokoda Track, and we at Paddy Pallin are incredibly proud to have helped out.  Well done Garry and Team BIGFISH.

AUSTRALIAN TIBET COUNCIL

Each year Paddy Pallin is proud to help provide the 2nd Prize of a $1000 Paddy Pallin gift voucher to the Australian Tibet Council for the Freedom for Tibet Raffle.

EDUCATION IN ACTION

After walking across Australia alone and unaided in 2003, Dave Mckern and Rupert the dog have not stopped there!

Dave has always been actively involved with the local community and also his local primary school, which his 3 sons attend. This has provided him with a firm foundation and strong passion for his latest undertaking -- ‘Education in Action.’

Education in Action (EiA) is an ambitious project designed to give children an insight to the greater world around them. It is focused on encouraging interaction, team work and stimulating children’s thinking about the world outside the classroom, home, or whatever environment they find themselves limited by. This is achieved through the creative use of global communications technology and the internet, giving children and adults an authentic, first-hand experience of life in the Australian outback. Communication is achieved through 3 mediums: face to face presentations, teleconferencing and the website which serves as a hub for students, parents and teachers to source information, stay informed and interact with each other through the online forums.

Through EiA, Dave has always promoted and encouraged:
• outdoor activity and fitness
• goal setting
• the benefits of healthy lifestyle
• the history, wonder and beauty of the Australian country
• the notion that dreams can be achieved

GEMMA WOLDENDORP AND NATASHA SEBIRE’S INDIAN HIMALAYA EXPEDITION.

Gem and Tash set out to climb new routes on granite peaks and towers in the remote Miyar Valley in the Lahul district of the Himachal Pradesh, Indian Himalaya. Few climbing teams have ventured into this area, and only a handful of peaks have been climbed in only a few areas within the valley. The Miyar Valley has several smaller side valleys and  some of these have had no climbing exploration. We know of only one all-female climbing team that has been into this area but due to illness, they did not climb anything. They plan to be the first Australian team to climb in this region. Their aim is to set up base camp at the head of the valley and explore the area, scoping out potential new routes and unclimbed peaks, moving camp when necessary. As the peaks are up to 6000m in altitude, they will start with easier climbs at lower altitudes for acclimatisation, then prepare themselves for a longer, more challenging new routes (preferably on an unclimbed peak).  Come back soon to hear more about Tash and Gem’s progress.

Paddy Pallin are proud to sponsor Gem and Tash and even more proud to have them both as staff members in the Paddy Pallin Katoomba store.

THE CANNIBAL RUN

The ‘Cannibal Run’ is a trip planned to retrace the escape route taken by Alex Pearce the cannibal convict, who in 1822 escaped from Sarah Island in Macquaire Harbour, Western Tasmania and travelled east to the then settled area of Ouse.  Pearce was the sole survivor who took 49 days to complete this arduous journey that led to starvation and ultimately cannibalism. Historically the emphasis has always been on the cannabilistic aspect of the journey where 5 of Pearces party were murdered and eaten. This has overshadowed the amazing feat of endurance and survival of the trek itself, through some of the most difficult terrain in Australia. The trip includes crossing the Braddon River/climbing Mt. Sorell/Clark River/Darwin Plateau/Andrew River/very rough terrain through Engineer Range/swim the mighty Franklin River/over the difficult Deception Range/onto Lighting and Loden Plains/Mt. Arrowsmith/King William Range and east to the township of Ouse. The 6 member team from Tasmania is comprised of 3 male and 3 females. Five of the team are active members of the SES Northern Search and Rescue Team and all are avid Bushwalkers. The team depart on the 17th November 2008 and we plan to post a podcast of their adventures early in 2009 as part of the soon to be launch Paddy Pallin Adventurer Podcast Series. Check back here for details.
